A Week In Patriarchy : Weekly Round Up 11th -17th March 2024

Hey- Red Violet here. Here’s the write up of this weeks news.

Romanian Court will allow Andrew Tate and his brother to be extradited to the UK

A Romanian court has ruled that Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan can be extradited to the UK, to face charges of of rape and human trafficking from 2012-2015.

They are currently facing separate proceedings in Romania for human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang. They can only be extradited once these are finished.

Previously, at least two British police authorities had investigated Andrew Tate’s activities in the UK. However, British prosecutors decided last year not to pursue their cases as they considered a conviction unlikely.

At this point I’m not sure if thats a win for women or Tate.

Angel Investing: UK Government’s U Turn

The UK government has decided to listen to the public and return to the previous rules on angel investing.

With certain conditions investors in very early stage companies in the UK qualify for tax breaks. This is designed to encourage investments in early start-ups.

The proposal wanted to increase the threshold in yearly earning to qualify from £100,000/ year to £170,000/year. This would have meant that 72,500 women could invest in eligible young companies in a tax-friendly way, compared to 291,000 under the old regime.

As women led companies receive hardly any funding from VCs, there was an outcry that female investors would be disproportionately affected.

As a result of the outcry, the government did an about-turn.

This weeks episode of ‘guess who said it’?

“It's like trying not to be racist but you see Diane Abbott on the TV, and you're just like… you just want to hate all black women because she's there."

That’s right. It was Frank Hester, a major donor to the ruling Conservative party in the UK. If that’s not bad enough he also said that she “should be shot”.

She, being the first black woman elected to parliament and the longest-serving black MP representing the non-ruling party that will most likely win the next election.

There’ve been calls for him to resign from his company which won government contracts, so the taxpayers are paying for his lifestyle.

His comments prompted a session in UK Parliament on racism. Bizarrely, Dianne Abbott - i.e the subject of the comments -was not called to speak during this session. She had to sit there and watch people speak for her.

I cannot imagine anything more infuriating.

Electoral Commission records show Mr Hester donated £10m to the Tories last year, including a £5m donation to Rishi Sunak that came from him personally and another £5m that came from his healthcare software firm in November. This might explain why the government took so long to condemn his comments.

After a massive outcry and demonstrations in support for Ms Abbott, Hester apologised but I think this might be one of those sorry-I-called-for-you-to-be-shot moments when an apology doesn’t quite cut it.

See if you can spot what’s wrong with this conversation?

This is an excerpt from the testimony of when Laura Haynor, Delta Air Lines First Officer and member of the Air Line Pilots Association, in the State Senate when questioned by District 27 Senator Gene Dornink.

“Good afternoon and thank you for this opportunity to testify on behalf of Airline Pilot Association. The largest pilot union in the world with more than 24 hundred pilots in Minnesota. My name is Laura Haynor and I’m a Minnesota resident and a pilot for Delta airlines.”

.......

“And then Ms Haynor, is that correct?”

“Yes”

“Can you tell me what a typical work week look for you as a stewardess?”

Research indicates that women were 8–25% more likely to be introduced by their title when introduced by fellow women, while men introducing men were more likely to use the correct title.
